YOU can bring History, Arts and Culture to life!

Can you imagine Portsmouth without exhibitions like Gertrude Fiske, Jay Goldsmith, Wendy Turner or Edmund Tarbell? Can you picture how the city would look minus the iconic John Paul Jones House and Garden, or Discover Portsmouth’s recognizable façade at the corner of Islington and Middle Streets? Neither can we! And with your annual gift, we will work together to ensure that Portsmouth Historical Society remains financially sound, and continues to improve upon its long tradition of bringing arts, history and culture exhibitions and programming to all at a free or reduced cost!

In 2018, through the support of our generous donors, Portsmouth Historical Society will:

  • Provide FREE high quality exhibitions on American impressionist Gertrude Fiske, primitive artist Rose Labrie, and other regional past and current artists with supporting lectures, children’s programs, and symposia to more than 40,000 guests
  • Bring in depth Portsmouth history to the children of every third grade public classroom in the city
  • Welcome more than 5000 guests to the Annual Gingerbread House Contest, part of Vintage Christmas in Portsmouth
  • Make necessary repairs to the field stone foundations, exterior siding and internal plumbing of the historic John Paul Jones House
  • Add amplification to our popular walking tours for increased accessibility to the city’s great architectural history
  • Work in partnership with the City of Portsmouth to create a framework and develop Portsmouth400—a multi-year celebration of the city’s past, present and future

These successes make us proud, but there is still much to do! In 2019, with your help, we want to:

  • Continue our tradition of fine exhibitions and programs
  • Grow our arts programming for all ages
  • Increase our positive impact on low to moderate income families
  • Create plans to update the entrance ramp, elevators, and public restrooms at Discover Portsmouth for improved handicap accessibility
  • Improve exterior signage, update our website, and become the most efficient and effective arts, history, and culture organization around

Will you help us on this journey and make a generous gift to Portsmouth Historical Society today?

Our exhibition galleries, welcome center, historic house museum, public garden, walking tours and museum shop offer a little bit of everything for everyone. From here, we encourage our guests to go further afield to explore their passion—whether it be food, gardens, historic architecture, performing arts, or fantastic shopping. As the cultural gateway to the city, we introduce thousands of visitors every year to all of the arts, history and culture that the city has to offer.

We welcome your support, and thank you in advance for believing in the mission of YOUR Portsmouth Historical Society.
