2. The Prescott Story

by Ray Brighton

The Prescott Story by Ray Brighton, Portsmouth Marine Society

Before the Prescotts, Portsmouth’s Marcy Street waterfront, which was then called Water Street, was a notorious thoroughfare lined with saloons, dinghy shops and bawdy houses.

The author writes that…. "the most philanthropic persons Portsmouth has ever known were a pair of quiet, it might almost be said, "mousy" sisters." Mary Elizabeth Prescott and Josephine Fitts Prescott devoted the major part of their fortune to erasing the blighted waterfront area which includes what today is enjoyed by many visitors as Portsmouth’s beautiful Prescott Park.

How this transformation came about, is the "tale that will be told in The Prescott Story."

7×10 Hardcover, 120 pages.
