Portsmouth Advocates, a key program of the Portsmouth Historical Society, is preparing for awards season! Since 1989 Portsmouth Advocates has honored individuals and projects that enhance the city’s unique historic character and make Portsmouth a better place to live and work. On Thursday, November 21, from 5:30-7pm at Discover Portsmouth, the Advocates will continue this tradition by presenting awards to exceptional individuals and projects completed within the last year.

Portsmouth Advocates is pleased to announce the following award winners:

  • For Restoring the Integrity of a Resource: awarded to Michael and Peter Labrie, for their work on the YMCA Building, Congress Street Façade;
  • For Continued and Sensitive Maintenance of a Historic Property: awarded to Blair and Jan McCracken, for their work on Tibbetts House;
  • For Rehabilitation of a Historic Resource: awarded to Charles Seefried, for his work on the Larkin-Rice House; and to the Fabbrictore Family, for their work on 177 State Street;
  • For Preservation Planning and Advocacy: awarded to the Save St. Patrick’s School Team, and to the Wentworth-Gardner Board of Directors;
  • The Arthur J. Gerrier Memorial Award: presented to John Schnitzler; Presented to an individual who is committed to serving our historic community, the Arthur Gerrier Award is named after was a longtime member of the Portsmouth Advocates Board and an outstanding architectural historian;
  • John Grossman Memorial Award: awarded to Robert Thoreson; Recognizing an individual who makes a reality of an organization’s mission by bridging the theoretical and the practical, the John Grossman Award is named after was a tireless supporter of Portsmouth nonprofits and Chair of Portsmouth Advocates for many years
  • Special Recognition Award: presented to Elizabeth Dinan, for her reporting coverage of Creek Farm.

Portsmouth Advocates occasionally extends special recognition to individuals for noteworthy work within our historic community.

Portsmouth Advocates

Formed in 1980, Portsmouth Advocates was established to “promote the maintenance of the historical and architectural integrity of the structures and cityscape of the City of Portsmouth.” In 2012 Portsmouth Advocates became part of the Portsmouth Historical Society.
