SUMMARY:Indigenous Life in New England
DESCRIPTION:Learn about indigenous life by building a traditional wigwam\n \n \n \n \n \n Register for the Indigenous Life in New England Family Day\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About the Presenter:\nJennifer Lee has been enjoying making bark baskets for 40 years. Her interest began with the study of her Native American ancestors of the Northeast Woodlands. She teaches basket classes and educational programs extensively. The bark roots and branches are wild harvested by her family in the Northern\nBerkshire Mountains of Massachusetts. She’s received awards at the Mohegan Wigwam Festival\, Saratoga Native American Festival\, Kearsage Indian Museum\, Deerfield Craft Show\, and North Carolina Basketmakers Association.\n***********************\nJennifer Lee is enrolled with the Metis Nation of North America and the Northern Narragansetts. She grew up without knowledge of her Indian Ancestry. She has spent her adult life learning the true history and culture of the Northeast Woodland Indigenous Peoples. She shares what she’s learning at schools\,\nhistoric sites\, and community events. Often\, classes are held in her conical wigwam. She lives in the Northern Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts. She spends her time with her Grandkids\, gardening\, berry picking\, maintaining the houses she’s built\, making baskets\, teaching basketry\, and attending as\nmany powwows as possible. She is grateful to the Creator for being able to follow her heart.

SUMMARY:Read it and Eat!
DESCRIPTION:Register for Read It and Eat! Fall Flavors\n \n \n \n \n \n If you cannot attend our events this year (May 20th\, July 22nd\, September 23rd)\, you can still submit a recipe for our community cookbook! Email our Programs Coordinator\, Sarah Robbitts-Terry at sarah@portsmouthhistory.org to submit your recipe. \n \n \n \n \n \n FAQs\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n What is currently in-season?\n Apples\, beets\, blueberries\, broccoli\, brussels sprouts\, cabbage\, carrots\, cauliflower\, corn\, cucumbers\, eggplant\, green beans\, kale\, melons\, peaches\, pears\, peppers\, pumpkins\, raspberries\, spinach\, squash\, tomatoes\, zucchini\n \n \n \n \n \n How many people should my dish serve?\n We usually have 15-20 people at each Read It and Eat event\, however each of those individuals will all be making a dish! If your recipe serves 4-6\, that should be more than enough. People tend to take small portions so they can try everything.\n \n \n \n \n \n Will alcohol be served? Can I use it in a recipe?\n Per the conditions of our liquor license with the city\, we do not serve alcohol at these events\, and guests cannot bring alcohol to drink. However\, dishes with cooked alcohol are perfectly fine to bring.\n \n \n \n \n \n How are food allergies handled?\n We do ask people to provide us with a list of ingredients in their dishes\, but this is a potluck-style dinner with dishes all laid out together on a long table and served family-style. Dishes are prepared at individuals’ homes and cross-contamination cannot be ruled out.\n \n \n \n \n \n Are non-alcoholic drinks provided?\n Yes! In addition to water and seltzer\, we provide fun mocktails for everyone to enjoy!\n \n \n \n \n \n Can I plug in my crock pot?\n Unfortunately\, we do not have enough outlets to accommodate crock pots or other electrical equipment. Dishes must come ready to be served.

She enjoys exploring the minutiae of domestic life through a variety of media. \nCavaretta earned her undergraduate degree in Visual and Media Arts from Boston’s Emerson College and a Graphic Design Certificate from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. In 2012 she moved to the seacoast with her husband after a decade of working in the film industry in Los Angeles. She worked as a graphic designer until she had her first child in 2016 and continued to work as a freelance designer for numerous nonprofit organizations\, including the Ogunquit Museum of American Art (2015-2019) and Old York Historical Society (2015-current.) Cavaretta began printmaking in 2014 at Chases Garage in York\, Maine in various workshop settings. Since having her children she has leaned into block printing\, direct object printing\, and collagraph printing for their accessibility and speed. Either the ability to make a piece in a single nap time sitting or chipping away at a larger work little by little over a long period of time.\nIn 2021 Maine Magazine named Cavaretta one of the years’ artists to watch\, in 2023 she held her first solo exhibition at the Rochester Museum of Fine Arts. \nCavaretta teaches printmaking at Chases Garage in York\, Maine and is proud to sit on the board of art and wellness non-profit ArtHope ( 2015-present.) In 2024 Cavaretta was honored to become a juried member of the New Hampshire Art Association and the New England Monotype Guild.

SUMMARY:Read It and Eat + "DISH" Summer Dinner Party
DESCRIPTION:Register for Read It and Eat! + "DISH" Summer Dinner Party\n \n \n \n \n \n If you cannot attend our events this year (May 20th\, July 24th\, September 23rd)\, you can still submit a recipe for our community cookbook! Email our Programs Coordinator\, Sarah Robbitts-Terry at sarah@portsmouthhistory.org to submit your recipe. \n \n \n \n \n \n FAQs\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n What is currently in-season?\n Blueberries\, peaches\, raspberries\, beans\, peas\, beets\, broccoli\, cabbage\, carrots\, cauliflower\, celery\, cucumbers\, corn\, eggplant\, lettuce and salad greens\, onion\, peppers\, potatoes\, scallions\, spinach\, summer squash\, Swiss chard\, tomatoes\, turnips\, rutabagas\n \n \n \n \n \n How many people should my dish serve?\n We usually have 15-20 people at each Read It and Eat event\, however each of those individuals will all be making a dish! If your recipe serves 4-6\, that should be more than enough. People tend to take small portions so they can try everything.\n \n \n \n \n \n Will alcohol be served? Can I use it in a recipe?\n Per the conditions of the Historical Society’s liquor license with the city\, we do not serve alcohol at these events\, and guests cannot bring alcohol to drink. However\, dishes with cooked alcohol are perfectly fine to bring.\n3S Artspace has a bar and will be serving drinks.\n \n \n \n \n \n How are food allergies handled?\n We do ask people to provide us with a list of ingredients in their dishes\, but this is a potluck-style dinner with dishes all laid out together on a long table and served family-style. Dishes must come ready to be served.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Learn more about "Dish"\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About “Dish” at 3S Artspace\nWho prepares the food and who sits at the table? Through drawing and community engagement\, Laura Tanner explores how local foodways define a community’s identity and reflect contemporary challenges that the community is facing\, like food insecurity and climate change. Gathering oral histories from farmers\, chefs\, restaurant patrons\, and home cooks\, her drawings present a visual archive of rituals\, recipes\, and traditions. Alongside works focused on Miami and New Orleans\, the artist will premiere works inspired by the Portsmouth area in the exhibit at 3S Artspace. Her site-specific works examine foodways of the Seacoast\, deepening the understanding of our community\, its economy\, social structures\, political leanings\, and needs.

SUMMARY:Read it and Eat!
DESCRIPTION:Register for Read It and Eat! a spring potluck\n \n \n \n \n \n If you cannot attend our events this year (May 20th\, July 22nd\, September 23rd)\, you can still submit a recipe for our community cookbook! Email our Programs Coordinator\, Sarah Robbitts-Terry at sarah@portsmouthhistory.org to submit your recipe. \n \n \n \n \n \n FAQs\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n What is currently in-season?\n Arugula\, asparagus\, carrots\, chicory\, chives\, collard greens\, endive\, fiddleheads\, green onions\, mushrooms\, pea shoots\, radicchio\, radishes\, rosemary\, rhubarb\, swiss chard\, tarragon\, thyme\, turnips\, watercress \n \n \n \n \n \n How many people should my dish serve?\n We usually have 15-20 people at each Read It and Eat event\, however each of those individuals will all be making a dish!

SUMMARY:Lecture: 12\,000 Years in the Granite State
DESCRIPTION:Hear about what was happening in New Hampshire 12\,000 years ago.\n \n \n \n \n \n Register for 12\,000 Years in the Granite State\n \n \n \n \n \n More about the lecture:\nMore than 12\,000 years ago\, small groups of Paleoindians endured frigid winters on the edge of a small river in what would become Keene\, New Hampshire. In 2009\, an archaeological survey for the new Keene Middle School discovered the remains of their stay and brought to light one of the oldest Native American sites in New England. The remarkably intact site produced evidence of four separate dwellings containing over 200 stone tools and fragments of burned animal bone. These early people\, rather than being isolated stone-age nomads\, were part of a social network that extended across much of northeastern North America. The discovery and excavation of the site was required by the National Historic Preservation Act\, a frequently maligned piece of legislation that in this instance worked to save an irreplaceable piece of the human story.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About the Presenter:\nRobert Goodby is a professor of Anthropology at Franklin Pierce University in Rindge. He holds a Ph.D. in anthropology from Brown University and has spent more than thirty years studying Native American archaeological sites in New England. He is a past president of the New Hampshire Archeological Society\, a former Trustee of the Mount Kearsarge Indian Museum in Warner\, and served on the New Hampshire Commission on Native American Affairs. In 2010\, he directed the excavations of four 12\,000-year-old Paleoindian dwellings at the Tenant Swamp site in Keene\, and his book A Deep Presence: 13\,000 Years of Native American History\, was published in 2021 by Peter E. Randall Publisher. \n \n \n \n \n \n This event is made possible by a grant from New Hampshire Humanities
