SUMMARY:Book Signing: Portsmouth (a novel)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a book signing with author James Polus\nGet a chance to meet and speak with the author of Portsmouth. \nBooks will be available for sale in the gift shop. Admission is free\, no RSVP required. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About the Author:\nOriginally from Upstate New York\, a graduate of Hobart College and Columbia University\, and a former life long employee of IBM\, Polus has an amazing wife and four accomplished children. Serving in senior financial positions afforded him the opportunity to live in England for one year\, followed thereafter by four years in France. He considers himself as a citizen of the world to complement his proud American heritage. \nJame Polus published his first book\, entitled “The Dream of AO” in May 2021\, followed by the sequel\, “Dreams of Lies and Delusions”\, published in 2022. The historical backdrop is the Indus Valley civilization\, circa 1700 BCE. He believes we can reference ancient civilizations to remind us that the timeless themes of love\, courage\, honor and redemption have long competed with treachery\, deceit\, hatred and lust. Professional storytellers perfectly recited long\, epic morality tales\, illustrating for all peoples the lessons for a virtuous life. Battles over dogma\, spiritual beliefs\, and rituals date well before written texts. \nPolus enjoys creative and imaginary fiction using strong characters to espouse his ideas on human purpose and human equality. The motifs of dreaming and oral traditions serve as the backdrop for his writing. Most of his characters practice mindfulness and are skilled in various forms of meditation. As an avid cyclist\, he likes to pedal alone on quiet country roads or traverse along the long ocean stretches\, imagining the lives of his characters.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Buy Portsmouth by James Polus\n \n \n \n \n \n About the Book:\nHistorical fiction comes to New England with the epic novel\, “Portsmouth\,” a classical saga reliving the story of a 1623 fictitious family and twelve successive generations that bring New England seacoast history to life.Memorable characters interact with real-life personalities and historical events that shaped America. From the early Puritans to the Sons of Liberty and the Revolutionary War\, up through the Great Depression and World War II\, the novel brings American notables such as George Washington\, Ona Judge Staines\, Major General Fitz-John Porter\, Frank Jones\, and Celia Thaxter into the reader’s imagination. \n The novel “Portsmouth” celebrates the 400th anniversary of the founding of this historic seaport\, so reminiscent of colonial times

SUMMARY:Treasure from the Isles of Shoals: How New Archaeology is Changing Old History
DESCRIPTION:There is treasure here but not the pirate kind. Scientific “digs” on Smuttynose Island are changing New England history. Archaeologist Nathan Hamilton has unearthed 300\,000 artifacts to date on this largely uninhabited rock at the Isles of Shoals. Evidence proves prehistoric Native Americans hunted New Hampshire’s only offshore islands 6\,000 years ago. Hundreds of European fishermen split\, salted\, and dried valuable Atlantic cod here from the 1620s. “King Haley” ruled a survivalist kingdom here before Thomas Laighton struck tourist gold when his family took over the region’s first hotel on Smuttynose. Laighton’s daughter Celia Thaxter spun poetic tales of ghosts and pirates. J. Dennis Robinson\, a longtime Smuttynose steward\, explores the truth behind the romantic legends of Gosport Harbor in this colorful show-and-tell presentation. \nAdmission is free\, pre-registration recommended. \n \n Join the waitlist for Treasure from the Isle of Shoals\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About the Presenter:\nJ. Dennis Robinson has published over a dozen books and 3\,000 articles on history focused primarily on the seacoast region. He is the author of richly illustrated books on the Isles of Shoals\, Strawbery Banke Museum\, Wentworth by the Sea Hotel\, and Privateer Lynx. His new award-winning hardcover\, Music Hall\, tracks the 400-year evolution of the performing arts in Portsmouth. His first novel\, Point of Graves\, is a character driven “history mystery” that explores Black history in New Hampshire’s only seaport. He is currently completing a history of New Castle\, a provocative study of the first NH settlement in 1623\, and a comic book history of Portsmouth for kids with children’s book illustrator Robert Squier. His work can be seen at jdennisrobinson.com online. \n \n \n \n \n \n This event is made possible by a grant from New Hampshire Humanities

SUMMARY:Family\, Memory\, Place: Writing Family Stories for Our Community
DESCRIPTION:What family stories do you carry with you? What story do you tell over and over? What landscape do you cherish the most? One of the deepest human instincts is to tell our life stories\, to figure out who we are and what it means to be human. This interactive workshop led by Maura MacNeil explores how the landscapes of our lives shape the stories that we tell. Participants explore the themes of family\, memory\, and place through sample narratives and a series of short writing exercises\, gaining a deeper awareness of how their stories can preserve personal\, generational\, and communal history. \nAdmission is free\, pre-registration recommended. \n \n Register for Family\, Memory\, Place\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About the Presenter:\nMaura MacNeil is a writer\, editor\, and teacher. She is the author of the poetry collections: A History of Water (Finishing Line Press)\, Lost Houses (Kelsay Books)\, and This Last Place (Dancing Girl Press). Her poetry\, prose\, and critical writing has been published and anthologized in numerous publications over the past three decades including: Penning the Pandemic: An Anthology of Creative Writing from the Beginning of the Covid Era; Mud Chronicles: A New England Anthology; Poet Showcase: An Anthology of New Hampshire Poets; and Voices from the Frost Place Volume II. For over two decades she has taught writing at New England College in Henniker\, New Hampshire. \n \n \n \n \n \n This event is made possible by a grant from New Hampshire Humanities

Just like language and grammar\, these elements of design can be used in infinite ways. \nDate: Wednesday\, December 7Time: 12-1 pmFree AdmissionNo reservations required
