Hi I have lived and work in Portsmouth fir over 27 years. I am excited about the quilt square. Besides submitting a square, do you need help sewing the quilt together? I can help.
Eleanor,
Yes! We are absolutely looking for experienced crafters to help us with assembly when the time comes. Please email threads@portsmouthhistory.org with your contact information, and we’ll be in touch!
Please lmk if/when you need help putting the community quilt together. I’m a constant stitcher always looking for meaningful projects!
We are definitely looking for stitchers to help with assembly when the time comes. Could you email your contact information to threads@portsmouthhistory.org, please? We’re really excited about all the people offering to help already!
Just let me say that I have known Ellie Nevins for 25 years! You are so lucky to have her offer to help with the quilt assembly.
I can’t help with that but I will be sending a block.
This is a great project!
What size should the square be?
Susan, please check out THREADS: A Community Quilt for 2020 for all the details you’ll need on submitting a square!
I am a professional long arm quilter and would be happy to collaborate with your group to help design a quilting pattern to execute on this project when the piecing is done.It would be my pleasure to do this free of charge.
I would like to sign up for the lecture on Thursday but the link doesn’t seem to be working. I’m a grad student in quilt history at UNL .
Button fixed! I’m not sure what happened, as I’m sure it was working previously, but thank you VERY much for bringing it to our attention!
As an artist new to this area, I applaud this connection between the historical society and the artist community. I would like to take part in this next year, if it is an annual event.
Could someone get in touch with me and let me know?
With thanks in advance,
Ellen
For those of us who live 3000 miles away, it would be lovely to have larger photos of the quilt squares to look at.

So where can we see these?
The gingerbread houses are on view at the Portsmouth Historical Society at 10 Middle Street. We’re now open 7 days, 10am-5pm.
Houses are also on view in select downtown storefronts in and around Market Square as a scavenger hunt!
Do I need a reservation to come on Sunday, Dec.6 around 2:30? 2 people.
Thanks, Kathy Campbell
Kathy,
No reservations are required. Since returning to being open 7 days, traffic has been spread out enough that we haven’t needed to ask anyone to wait outside. We’ve got a really safe setup (masks required, contact tracing, one-way route, floor indicators) that is working very well at letting everyone enjoy the holiday cheer and stay safe!
I absolutely love these awards and all the work, care, and inspiration they reflect. We are lucky to live here. Next year, I will take my grandchildren on a walking tour of these historic spots. Is there a book that collects and shows all of these past awards too?
Thank you for all you do,
Mary Anker
Mary,
There isn’t a consolidated publication of the award winners, specifically, but Advocates founder Richard M. Candee’s book Building Portsmouth, which you can pick up at the shop or order from our online store, covers a lot of the historically important buildings in Portsmouth, and many have won the Advocates’ awards.
What a wonderful presentation of this year’s awards, especially all the information about the Governor’s House – we lived there for five years but never knew about its early years. Great job!
I’m looking for the hours you will be open in April. Putting the opening in my calendar .
Kate: we are working out some final details regarding staffing in the gallery and at the Museum Shop. We expect to announce hours within a week or so. We are definitely going to be open on April 2!
I enjoyed the exhibit, beautiful paintings
Wonderful paintings! What a shame that the “art world” decided realistic/representational painting – was no longer important. It’s a gift to be able to paint like that.
The Black Dog has participated in this contest for the past few years and we’re very excited to participate again. It’s always fun to see the kids’ (and adults’!) faces light up when they see the gingerbread houses in our front window.
I am planning to attend, but will be watching local COVID statistics for my final decision. If I arrive and it is very crowded, I will unfortunately have to make an on the spot decision to not come inside.
Laurie,
A very prudent point of view. New Hampshire numbers are not very encouraging at the moment. Please be aware that all staff and volunteers at Portsmouth Historical Society are required to be vaccinated, and we’ll be requiring everyone to provide proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test from the past 48 hours upon entry. We want to keep everyone healthy, too! I hope you have a happy holiday season, regardless of whether or not you feel comfortable attending!
I hope there will be more John Paul Jones items, especially larger men sizes (for us full figure guys).
I would like to say “Hi” and “Happy Holidays” to a great artist Gary Samson!
My name is Marina Forbes and we worked together at the NH Institute of Art in Manchester, NH, but it was so last century… In the late 90-s Gary created a serious of slides of my art and I’ve always cherished them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Looking forward to the May 6 event. There are many famous picture books and authors.
Excellently done. Glad we got to look through this fabulously curated and displayed exhibit.
Is there a theme for this years contest?
Yes, our theme this year is: Fictional places and characters.
I’m so excited to meet some of these illustrators, and greet others I’ve met. When is the reception and how do I get invited, pretty please with sugar on top?
The opening reception will be on Thursday, October 27 at 6 pm. We hope to see you there.
Your last exhibit of Children’s Book Illustrators was without a doubt one of your very best exhibits. In fact it was one of the best exhibits we have been to in a while. I told so many people about it and I know some of them attended and agreed with me.
Thank you for the kind words. We hope that you also enjoy this related exhibit.
Tell me, please — WHAT DAY AND TIME IS THE OPENING RECEPTION?
The opening reception will be on Thursday, October 27 at 6 pm
This looks GREAT!! Will the books be for sale? Thanks!
We have a majority of the book available for sale in our gift shop. Make sure to check out our events calendar as we will be having a number of the artists featured stop by for workshops, lectures, or signing events over the next two months.
I registered days ago but never received an e-mail confirmation. Do I need to register again?
Hi Julie, I just checked and you did successfully sign up. I’ll make sure you get sent the confirmation email!
Does the base have to be edible?
Great question. No! In fact, we recommend that it be something very sturdy, like plywood or a baking sheet. The houses have to be moved around quite a lot during setup, so it’s important for the base to be structurally sound.
I cannot find my registration email, will you please confirm that it was recieved?
Aubrey,
Yes, your registration was received. You should have an email from info@portsmouthhistory.org, although you registered a while ago, and I think I recall a hiccough with the confirmation emails early on this year, so maybe that’s why you didn’t receive one. If you can, mark info@portsmouthhistory.org as “not junk” so you can receive the update emails!
Thanks!

Will the Discover Portsmouth Welcome Center be open later than 5:00pm during the Christmas holiday for tours of the gingerbread houses? On Saturdays and Sundays during Candlelight Stroll for example? Thanks.
Yes, we will be open until 8 pm on both Friday, December 2 and Saturday, December 3.
I registered days ago but never received an e-mail confirmation.
Would you please check?
Thank you!
Hi Soraya, yes I can confirm your registration did go through successfully. I just sent you another email from sabina@portsmouthhistory.org. Please take a look in your spam folder to see if it got filtered out by mistake. Thank you!
I would love to come see the Gingerbread houses. When is the gallery open and what other tips do you have for seeing the houses?
This year’s Gingerbread exhibition will open on Friday, November 25 and remain open until December 22. We are open every day of the week 10am-5pm, but will hav extended hours on Friday, December 2 and Saturday, December3 when we are open until 8 pm. In addition to the main exhibition in the gallery we also have about 18 downtown partners who will have gingerbread houses displayed in their front windows. Make sure to come by before 12/14 to vote in our People’s Choice Awards!
We registered our gingerbread house for the Gastich-French family, but I don’t recall receiving a confirmation. Can you also remind me when the drop-off is?
Hi Charlie, it seems like several people had our emails go to spam this year. I’ve just sent you the email that went out with drop off info on Saturday and left a voicemail with the info at the number we have on record from your registration.
Hello,
We are looking forward to visiting the 2022 gingerbread house exhibit, but I am not familiar with downtown Portsmouth or the Portsmouth Historical Society – What is the address where the houses will be on display? Also wondering about easy parking? Thank you.
Thank you for including us in your December plans. You’ll want to put in 10 Middle Street, Portsmouth NH for the address. There is a pay to park city lot across the street from the Portsmouth Historical Society (10 Middle Street). Additionally, Islington Street, which is our cross street has free two hour parking as you head away from downtown. We hope you enjoy your visit!
Hi! My father, photographer JD Lincoln, published a book in the early 80s titled “People of Portsmouth”, a black and white record of the rise of Portsmouth in the 70s. I have a dozen copies and would be happy to donate one to the Historical Society if you are interested. His photos will be displayed for the 400th celebration this summer at the Athenaeum as well. Please contact me if there is any interest.
Leah Lincoln LaChance
Thank you so much for this offer. Our curator and exhibition manner will be in touch with you shortly.
Hi,
I’d love to see this book. Does the library have a copy?
Portsmouth Public Library has a copy available for in-library use only.
Yes please
I would love a copy.
WOULD YOU BE INTERESTED IN MY CHILD’S ROCKING CHAIR MY MOTHER BOUGHT AT A PORTSMOUTH FURNITURE STORE IN 1945.
and would you be interested in my mom’s wedding gown..Married at St John’s church in 1939. She lived at 423 Court ST.
All donation requests should be sent to collections@portsmouthhistory.org. I’ve forwarded this on your behalf.
Hi- I see you are featuring Calvin Libby art in an upcoming show.
I have silkscreens of his early Prescott Park Arts Festival poster if you are interested in exhibiting.
Hi Bill, thank you for reaching out. We are currently working on an area for community contributions to the exhibitions, please keep an eye out for that. An image of your poster would be a great contribution to this digital companion to the exhibition.
I’d like to register for “Does the truth matter?”
Hi Julie, you can register for this event on our website: https://portsmouthhistory.org/event/does-truth-matter/
Outstanding! We are fortunate to live
in this area with so many talented
individuals. Plus the History of our
Seacoast area.
I have a feeling my grandmother, Alice Ruggles, was named after this lovely painter. My grandmother was born in Stoneham MA, just outside of Boston) in 1906.
When will the 2023 theme be announced!?! Me and the Fam cant wait!
We’re probably going to make that announcement in early to mid-September, just finalizing a few of the behind-the-scenes details for next year. We’re also so excited, we can’t wait to see all the spectacular entries!
Great theme!
We are a Celtic store (Irish and Scottish) we try to build our window around the gingerbread house, so if that could be taken into consideration that would be awesome.
We did get your retailer submission and have loved seeing the houses in your window the past few years!
I visited Portsmouth last weekend with my daughter and son-in-law, as way to mark the 400th anniversary of the arrival and settlement of our 9th great grandfather, David Thompson, on the New Hampshire coast. We visited Thompson Island, Hampton Beach, and Rye also, and felt an amazing connection and kinship with him.
One of the highlights of our visit was taking a walking tour of Portsmouth with Jeff Thomson of the PHS, who gave a very informative and interesting history of Portsmouth, its development, architecture, historical figures, and amusing anecdotes of the town. It was great having a native of the town making the presentation.
I’m so glad you had a great time visiting Portsmouth. It’s a shame it’s Jeff Thomson, not Thompson and you didn’t discover a distant cousin still living in the area!
What is the theme for this year for the gingerbread contest. thanks!
Hi Juliet, check out the 2023 Gingerbread page https://portsmouthhistory.org/exhibitions/gingerbread2023/
Hi. I’m interested in my students submitting their gingerbread houses next year. I teach in Epping High School and I have approximately 9 gingerbread houses the students complete. I’m looking forward to getting your newsletter to see if this is something we can possible participate in next Christmas. Thank you.
We would love to have your students take part in the Gingerbread Exhibition next year!
We have been inspired by seeing al the beautiful creations to enter a house ourselves for 2024, Do you have a set of rules that must be followed to submit a house for the competition?
Yes, we always post the rules on our registration page. All entries must be on a solid base (wood preferred) measuring no more than 15×15 inches. The entries must also be made out of entirely edible material (no lollipop sticks or candy wrappers).
One more question, is there a theme that must be followed?
There is always a theme, but that theme is more of a suggestion. We’ve had prize-winning houses that don’t follow the theme. If you have inspiration we totally encourage you to go with it!
Good work, Molly!
Very interesting. I am looking forward to visiting the John Paul Jones House this summer and viewing this intriguing exhibit!
It was so great to have people see the exhibition on Opening Day! We look forward to having you stop by!
Molly,
Exhibit looks wonderful!! Katie and I
need to make a plan to visit!
Anne ( Sullivan)
Looks fascinating! Can’t wait to see it! So proud of you!
Love,
Dad
This exhibit looks amazing, one of my favorite sculptors and I didn’t realize he painted as well. What an inspiration! Thank you.
We’re looking forward to the show, too! Stay tuned for more details!
Can’t wait!
Hi I work in child care can I do a gingerbread with my students age 3 to 5
Absolutely! We would love to have you enter. There’s a multi-generational category or a kids category that you could enter the house under.
Thank you for all you do!
What days are the exhibition and are tickets required?
The exhibition is open daily (with some disruption for the holidays). We are open 10 a.m.–5 p.m. most days. Tickets are not required for this free exhibition. Hope to see you there!
What time does your event start on Friday, November 29? We want to come and see the gingerbread houses.
Doors open at 10 a.m. We always have a line waiting outside the door to come in and see this fun holiday event.
Is the Gingerbread contest open on Christmas Eve? And, if so, what are the hours?
Yes, the exhibition will be open 10-2 on Christmas Eve.
Thanks so much!
How wonderful and creative these are! Congratulations to all.
My grand daughter entered a gingerbread house in the contest this year. I am wondering how and when we should pick this up now the the exhibition is over.
Thank you for your response
Barbara Daughan
Hello Barbara, you should have gotten an email the week before Christmas with instructions. You can email info@portsmouthhistory.org to coordinate the details. Thank you for taking part in the contest!
Hello! I used to work at PHS and have known about this program for a while but haven’t done anything about it. I live in an old house in Portsmouth-it would be nice to know the history!
It’s been great seeing more plaques go up around town and people who are interested in their home’s history. Keep an eye out, we are planning more research events for 2025 and hope to have some posted soon.
Excited to see ceiling in the office restored. I worked there from 2005 through 2014 and was constantly picking up peeling paint scraps.
It was a long time coming and we hope to continue preservation efforts to mitigate future peeling.
Doug Grant is an extraordinarily talented painter! I have known him a long time and use him for all my painting needs. A shout out to him would be great! This restoration is beautiful!
Hi Suzanne, we too think Doug is great, that is why we mention him when we talk about the preservation work!
I have an unusual print from the William Gage estate that shows a full sail vessel. It is said by Gage that the print was a first of a kind in color dating back to the origins of this country.
Of Interest?
I’ll forward your info to our collections team, thank you for thinking of us.
Horse and sunset
Hello! My daughter Juliana Carvalho submitted an art piece for the Young Artists Contest. She recognizes we should have used day light natural lighting to capture her picture. If it will be acceptable to send another picture in daylight via email, please let us know. We understand that the next daylight time is past the due date, and it is fine if she cannot. Thank you!
Of course, we’d be happy to have you send an updated photograph. We’ll reach out to you directly.
Kudos to Elaine for her assistance!
The form appears to be for 2024. What is theme, please?
Looks like you jumped right to the registration page without making it to the Gingerbread Homepage first. https://portsmouthhistory.org/exhibitions/gingerbread2025/
Our theme is The Great Gingerbread Experiment!
My husband and I just went to visit the Portsmouth Historical Society yesterday and were so impressed by the Cabot Lyford Exhibition that was presently on view there. The works chosen were phenomenal and the scholarship explaining how they fit into Cabot Lyford’s life story were enlightening. I’ve never seen so many of his watercolors before and they were delightful. We particularly enjoyed his animal sculptures which seem to grab a moment in time. Thank you so much for highlighting this superb artist and his works
We are so glad you were able to visit the show and enjoyed it so much. It has been a pleasure to display Lyford’s work this year.
Can we bring gingerbread creations in tomorrow, Friday? Or only Saturday and Sunday?
Is the gingerbread display open Sunday Dec.7
Hi Joan, the contest is open daily (other than Christmas Day). You can find out holiday hours on this page (just under programs and events).
Is the building and display area handicapped accessible?
Yes it is! We have an accessible ramp at the rear of the building and the Gingerbread Houses are located ont he first floor right when you enter (no additional stairs). If you’d like to visit our second floor galleries, there is an elevator for those who would like to use it.
This project has been so exciting! Thank you to Margaret, Elaine and the whole team for making it so easy. Our house will proudly wear its new plaque.
Love this! Are you planning an event with a guest speaker at all? I’m planning on hosting a related event at Rye Public Library… Might be fun to co-host or co-promote events at local libraries? LMK your thoughts!
Scott
Asst. Director
RPL
This sounds great, we’re in early planning stages and will reach out to you via email.
Looking forward to it! Our general inbox contact@ryepubliclibrary.org will get to me.
This sounds Amazing id love to join
I live in Portsmouth and I have a longtime related podcast. I am interested to know what event, Scott?
Are you local Martin? Are you doing any public speaking?
Besides being a member, longtime antiques/art appraiser, I do a longtime show on UFOs and know Kathleen Marden (Betty’s niece). I am really happy this is being done in such a positive way
I met Betty Hill in the early 70s. She was the guest speaker at a gathering of psychics in Rye, NH. A friend invited me.
Hello! I’ve lived in Betty and Barney’s house for the past 18 years. I perform in the musical group Kong Moon, and was interested in contributing to your exhibition. We wrote a song about the Betty and Barney Hill experience, entitled Enchanted Nights.
I know there is a call to artists for this exhibit, and wonder if a song would somehow fit in the show.
The song is unique, accessible, and melodic. We recently recorded it in town at the Electric Cave, so this, as of yet, unreleased song could be ready for the opening.
Is there someone at the Portsmouth Historical Society that would be interested in hearing Enchanted Nights?
Please let me know, and thank you for your time.
That sounds really interesting, our Outreach Director will be in contact soon!
Excellent!
Wow, that’s pretty interesting that you are in their old home. I live near state street and have been intrigued by an interview where Betty Hill mentioned that, prior to their well-known incident, she had witnessed an object explode in the sky and that a family member recovered some of the debris. She said she kept the pieces for a time, but eventually threw them into her backyard, where they were later covered with fill.
It would certainly be interesting to see if anything like that could ever be recovered – happy to volunteer if there’s ever a backyard archaeology project 😄
How do we secure an opportunity to visit on 4/1?
We’ll be open to the public. Please stop by 10 Middle St and we can get you set up for the visit!
Hi. I know the existing home is not historical but I am curious what was here long ago.
We’ve had lots of people with new builds on historic lots take part in this program and choose to feature earlier history of the property. We don’t have our next Info & Research Session scheduled, but keep an eye your for one. If you are able to come it’ll give you a good sense of the resources available.
My father’s family is related to Gov. John Langdon & my mother’s family is related to Gov. John Wentworth. My kids/grandkids are planning a road trip to Portsmouth this summer for a family genealogy tour. Want them to learn about USA’s first insurrection there (started by our relatives). Can’t wait!!
That’s quite the collection (on both sides of the Revolutionary War!). Sounds like a lovely plan for the summer, can’t wait to have you visit.
The recipe is too small too read as is. There is no way to zoom in or a link to click on.
The phones have a way of shrinking the images. If you download the image it is an 8.5×11, but we made it even easier and now have a link to a downloadable PDF right below the image. Enjoy!
Hello.
I’m wondering if you have any speakers that will be coming to the Betty and barney exhibition?
And if so can you purchase advanced tickets?
How much is it yo see their exhibition?
Hours are 10a to 5pm correct?
Thank you.
Hi Elizabeth. We are finalizing speakers related to Betty & barney. It’s looking like additional programming will take place in late summer or fall (potentially around the September 19 anniversary of the incident). We will put events on the website and share via our email and socials once we have dates confirmed (tickets will be available in advance). You can visit the exhibition daily 10 am – 5 pm, admission is between $5-10. Hope you get a chance to stop by!
Betty Hill and I worked together as social workers for the State of NH DCYF program in the mid 1960s. This is when Barney and Betty decided to go under hypnoses to see if what they were remembering about their 1961 encounter was true. What interesting stories Betty told! Did we fellow workers believe her? I do not think so at the time!
Thank you so much for sharing this!
Can i get confirmation on my gingerbread entry form and verify the drop off times please?
I thought I saved the information but can’t find it
Hi Shari, we just gave you a call on the number you used during registration and left a voicemail with drop off info. You also should have received an email on Saturday with important dates. If you don’t see that in your inbox, you might want to look in your spam folder. Thank you and we can’t wait to see your gingerbread!
