A trio of 19th-century fires swept through downtown Portsmouth radically changing the cityscape. The Brick Act of 1814 was the direct response to these disastrous fires, attempting to limit the popularity of highly flammable wooden structures. Many of the downtown buildings you know today were built while the brick acts were in place.

Most people know about Paul Revere’s most famous ride to Lexington and Concord in April of 1775, but did you know that he set forth from Boston four months earlier to Portsmouth? He came with a warning about rising tensions between British regulars and colonists, specifically that the military may try to seize provincial powder stores at Fort William and Mary.

This treaty formally ended the Russo-Japanese War. It was signed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, NH on September 5, 1905. President Theodore Roosevelt was instrumental in this treaty and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906 for his efforts before and during the peace treaty, despite not being present in Portsmouth during the negotiations.

A Scottish-born naval commander who fought for the United states during the American Revolution. He is often credited as being the “Father of the American Navy.” His famous ship the USS Ranger was built in the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and it is believed that he boarded here in Portsmouth at what is now called the John Paul Jones House.
